A Special Update from The Dwelling Place

The following message is from Sr. Joann Sambs, CSA, administrator of The Dwelling Place.

Dear beloved friends of The Dwelling Place,

Life has changed dramatically for all of us during the pandemic, and The Dwelling Place is no exception. Because of safety concerns with our dorm setting and small living quarters, we have not been able to take in new residents during the last few months. Our staff generously and faithfully cared for the four residents who lived with us during the height of the pandemic. Recently we found housing for them with another trusted agency. Each of the women now has a room of her own, where she will continue to receive the assistance needed for the next steps in her journey out of homelessness.

It is now a little quieter here in our building on 40th Street. As we wait for it to be safe to welcome new women again, The Dwelling Place will evaluate and restructure our services where appropriate, make needed repairs, and perform other maintenance. We also will be closely monitoring state and federal guidelines as we determine how we might safely reopen in the future.

Our donors have been a beacon of light and hope for us during the past few months. Your generous monetary donations, along with donations of food and household supplies, made it possible for us to carry on our mission during these unforeseen circumstances. The many thoughtful calls and emails we have received have assured us that we are surrounded by a community of caring people. Thank you for your continued support of The Dwelling Place!

I have some additional news to share with you. Earlier this year, my religious community, the Sisters of St. Agnes from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, asked me to take on a new role of service caring for our sisters at our retirement center back in Fond du Lac. I have accepted this request and in doing so, will resign from my position here at The Dwelling Place, effective July 17. I do so with a grateful heart, treasuring the time I have been able to serve in the name of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany with our dedicated staff, our board members, our volunteers, and each of you. Together we have served so many courageous women seeking to better their lives.

I have met many of you personally at events or worked with you on committees and/or enjoyed your visits to Dwelling Place. There are also many of you whom I have come to know as I acknowledged your donations. I would write to you often and you became friends even if we didn’t have the chance to meet in person. Please know that I will continue to hold all of you in my heart and prayers especially as this re-founding moment in the life of The Dwelling Place unfolds.

Our board of directors is conducting a search for a new administrator. Members of the board of directors will keep you informed as plans for the future become clear and reopening becomes safe and possible. Until then, please join us in our resolve to renew and strengthen the services we offer to women on their journey from homeless to home.

With deep affection and gratitude,

Sr. Joann Sambs, CSA
