Reopening Update: A Lot Can Happen in Two Weeks!

How quickly time passes! The Dwelling Place reopened two weeks ago, and now we have four women staying with us, each of whom have experienced a series of life-changing events during the pandemic. The staff has welcomed them with open (albeit socially-distanced!) arms.

On arrival, each woman found a basket on her bedside table filled with personal items and PPE. A generous donor provided welcome gifts of soft socks, lotion, and a gift card, and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York also contributed gift cards that will allow the women to purchase clothes for job interviews and MetroCards to travel to in-person interviews.

Throughout the past two weeks, we introduced the women to some of our partner organizations:

  • Each woman was able to select a primary care physician and a mental health specialist (if needed) through services coordinated by Housing Works, Inc.

  • Some of the women began taking virtual yoga classes led by Exhale to Inhale. These classes are designed for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and other traumatic experiences.

  • Several of the women began working with The Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless, through which they will receive job training and work experience.

Our tremendous staff has been following all health and safety guidelines while caring for the women. Luisa is overseeing the kitchen and is busy brainstorming healthy food recipes. Carmela is keeping us all safe by maintaining a rigorous sanitizing schedule. Deborah, our administrator, is extremely proud of them and the way they serve the women with grace and dignity.

All in all, our first two weeks was filled with opportunities to get to know one another. We are grateful for the kind messages that we have received, as well as the offers of help from volunteers. We could not have reopened without your support.
