Electrical Workers Provide Service Day
The Dwelling Place extends sincere gratitude to members of the Electrical Workers Minority Caucus (EWMC) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) – Local 3 based in New York City for the day of service they offered on Thursday, January 14, 2016. The EWMC consists of members from around the US. Each year they come together near Martin Luther King Day for a conference in a major city. New York City was the site for their gathering in 2016. A day of service is an integral part of their conference schedule.
IBEW-Local 3 arranged the sites for this year’s service projects with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York. As one of the agencies of Catholic Charities, The Dwelling Place was chosen to benefit from the generosity and skills of the electrical workers. Prior to the service day the coordinators for the day visited our site to determine what projects would be most beneficial. Since we are a shelter for women they decided to encourage women from the EWMC to work at The Dwelling Place for this project.
A group of eleven members (10 women and one gentleman) of EWMC from California, Georgia, and New York arrived at The Dwelling Place Thursday morning eager to be of assistance. Some set to work checking out the safety of the electrical outlets in the dorms and made repairs and updates as needed. They assessed other electrical needs in the building updating what they could within their time frame and offered recommendations for future projects. To complete their service they tracked and labeled all the breakers in our electrical panels.
Others painted the basement storage room which was long overdue for fresh plastering and painting. A retired professional painter, Manny, the father of one of the on-site coordinators for the day, joined the group and took charge of the painting project teaching a group of electricians a new skill! By 3:00 pm the room was transformed and everything moved back into place.
The staff and residents will remember this group and their generous and skillful presence with great admiration and gratitude.
